Ugandans in S Africa Thank The Botswana Government For Response to Uganda's Presidential Elections

03 March 2016

The Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation
Gabarone, Republic of Botswana

Dear Madam,

Thanking the Government of Botswana for Standing Up for Democracy and Human Rights in Uganda

On behalf of the Ugandan community living in South Africa, we wish to express our sincere thanks to your government for standing up for democracy and human rights in Uganda.

Your track record on democracy is widely recognised and your position on the outcome of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections held in Uganda on 18 February 2016 gives Ugandans strength knowing that at the time when other African countries have either congratulated Mr. Yoweri Museveni on his ‘victory’ or turned a blind eye to what Uganda is going through, Botswana has chosen to stand on the side that glorifies human liberties.

At the time of writing this letter, Dr. Kiiza Besigye, the main presidential contender in the recently concluded elections has been arrested more than eight times, without being charged, since the elections. He was also prevented from challenging the election results in court within the stipulated ten days. The situation in Uganda remains very tense, with intimidation of the populace by security agencies the order of the day.

We once again thank you for having stood with Ugandans at this dark hour.

Please Honourable Minister, accept the assurances of our highest consideration, esteem and regard.

Yours Sincerely,

1.       Stephen Twinoburyo
